The Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Zinarothorn, Ober Gabelhorn, Dent Blanche, Weisshorn, Bietschhorn, Grand Combin ñ these are some of the most dramatic mountains in Europe. Here they form a backdrop to a series of routes that should answer the dreams of any keen mountain walker.
This guide covers 48 selected day walks as well as 6-day round walks through the matter valley and a 3-day walk from the Rhone valley over the Simpson pass to Gondo. Plus 57 colour photos, 49 1:50,000 walking maps, one 1:100,000 walking map as well as a 1:800,000 contextualising map.
No special equipment is necessary for these walks. Experience in walking along narrow and sometimes exposed sections is an advantage. Some of the walks are easy, being suitable for family outings and now and then mountain bikes can also be used.
Hiking in the Valais canton is described in one hundred walks in two guides: 'Valais East' and 'Valais West'. Here, in the Valais West guide, you will find 50 walks in the French speaking part of the Canton. We have kept to the official language boundary between Swiss German/Swiss French along the Raspille (a stream between Salgesch and Siders). The 50 walks on the flanks of the Rhone valley and in its side valleys promise impressive views of the nautral and agricultural landscape of the Valais. All the walks run along either footpaths, marked mountain paths or obvious paths. No special gear or training is necessary, but you should have had some experience in walking along narrow and somtimes exposed paths. Many of the suggestions for walks are also suitable for families with children (these have been specially signed out). Due to the snow in high places, however, other walks might still be impassable in early summer.
Once again there are three factors which stamp our enlarged area around the Zugspitze as a genuine walking paradise. Firstly, one must mention the network of paths. Almost all the summit ascents in this part of the Alps are on well-marked and prepared paths. Even the rocky preserves of the Wetterstein, Karwendel and Mieminger mountains the paths and mountain tracks offer the walker a wide panorama of opportunity. The next "plus" is the height of the villages and the ample chair lifts or gondoloas with which to reach interesting start points. Last, but not least one must emphasise the beauty of the countryside with all its attractions both natural and man-made.
