Herefordshire Bricks and BrickmakersHerefordshire Bricks and Brickmakers
(Ref. Code. ISBN 9781904396703)

This book will give you a greater understanding of some features in the countryside and will leave you better placed to 'read' a brick building in terms of it's age of construction; whether the bricks were made locally, or in one of the larger factories in Herefordshire or came from outside the county; to what pattern or patterns the bricks were laid; possibly even the type of mortar used. Alll in all you will end up appreciating yet more details of your locality. The last half of the book is a gazeteer of the sites of known brickworks in the county on a parish by parish basis.

John Venn and the Friends of the Hereford PoorJohn Venn and the Friends of the Hereford Poor
(Ref. Code. ISBN 9781904396710)

The Rev. John Venn came from a circle that included William Wilberforce and others of a passionate, evangelising Christian mind. After some service in London, a friend gained him an appointment to the living of St. Peter's in Hereford, part of this parish including St. Owen's, the poorest part of the city. In the extreme winters of the early 1840's Venn soon found himself organising a soup kitchen to help keep people alive and healthy. Quickly realising that this was only dealing with the symptoms of of poverty, and imbued with the belief that all poverty could be dispelled by work, he made a proposal which saw the establishment of the Society for Aiding the Industrious.

Cider in the Three CountiesCider in the Three Counties
(Ref. Code. FIONAMAC)

This is anything but a dry book! It tackles the subject of cider and perry in the three counties of Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire in a slightly unusual way, in that the art of cider making from selecting vrieties of fruit, planting and growing trees to the packaging and marketing of the completed product, is woven into the history and stories of cider makers from 1900 to the present day. There is both art and science in cider making, an activity which is done an injustice through the persistence of the image of scrumpy, however jovial an image that may conjure up. Yet scrumpy is covered too, as are aspects of folklore and tales of the effect of cider drinking, along with descriptions of the cider houses that have and still do exist in the Three Counties... More...

Railways of HerefordRailways of Hereford
(Ref. Code. GORDONWOOD)

'Railways of Hereford' is the result of twenty years of comprehensive research into various aspects of the origins and development of railways in the city. Details are provided on the rivalries that existed between the railway companies, their Directors, Engineers and Secretaries, the infrastructure, including the stations and bridges, and also how the railways were operated. A previously unrecorded aspect of railway operation that has taken almost seven years of research and discussions with local railwaymen is the detail of how each of the sidings within the city were operated. Extensive use has been made of original source material that now challenges some of the generally-held views of the history of Hereford. The text is enhanced by the use of a wide range of maps and illustrations that have been drawn by the author.

Herefordshire's Postcard PastHerefordshire's Postcard Past
(Ref. Code. TIMWARD)

This is the fourth book of old postcards of Herefordshire compiled by Tim Ward. The book contains almost 200 images largely from the first two decades of the 1900s with a fairly even spread across the county. The city of Hereford and all the market towns are well represented, along with a good smattering of villages and hamlets. But perhaps it is the events, rather than the places that are depicted which are of greater interest. Included are early flying machines landing in the county, sheep shearing, a bus tackling the Fromes Hill hill climb, volunteer reservists undergoing training, the opening of a new church, the church Army at work, saw mills in operation, a chemical works, former shops, pubs, post offices and railway stations - even an eviction from a country cottage... More...
